The Completion of the Learning Journey for Adam Smith Students
Readers may recall the article entitled “Inspiring Learning” published on the Lomond web site in January this year. This reported on Lomond Group Director Alan Seath undertaking a presentation on the diverse and sustainable construction industry which was delivered to students in the General Skills course at the Adam Smith College. Since then there have been two follow-up sessions with the students. The first was in April with students visiting the Lomond Business Park and then recently a visit to the New Farm Vale site at Lochgelly.
The visit to the Business Park involved the students in a presentation about the remote Shetland Islands and how to build houses on the supply chain. The young men and women were informed about the location, climate, culture and tourist attractions of the Islands as well as the origins of their people. The main focus of the talk was the need for housing in the capital Lerwick and how these properties can be built by the Lomond Group, supplying the Island from a mainland business location. This was followed by light refreshments and then a short tour of the Business Park showing the students how business is conducted in the Construction Industry. Peter Moran, a long serving Lomond employee, demonstrated a JCB in operation and then the students, under supervision from Peter, got first-hand experience of the intricacies of the controls of the earth moving machine. Even Moira Connell [Adam Smith Tutor] got a shot. Joe was the real star, the best JCB operator on the day.

The visit to the operational site at New Farm Vale was the final part of this three stage learning experience. The students had heard about the opportunities in the Construction Industry in January, followed by an informative talk on the supply chain and the way in which the Lomond Group of companies operate. The last stage of the learning journey allowed them to see how a house was built from foundation to kit erection, fit-out and then completion in the form a fully furnished show house. The students were accompanied by Alan Seath, Corrina Black, Sales Manager and Lomond Homes Contracts Director Alan Beaton one of the most experienced men in the industry. Alan entertained the youngsters and answered all the questions asked of him much to the delight of everyone.
We hope the students gained inspiration from the first of these series of learning experiences and that it assists them in developing their careers. We wish them all the very best in the future and look forward to working with the College again in the 2011/12 academic year.
